Laura E. Felley

Laura is from Maryland, but tells all non-Marylanders that she's from DC. She graduated from the University of Chicago in 2009 with Bachelors of Arts degrees in biology and psychology. She spent a year at the NIH studying osteogenesis imperfecta before joining the University of Wisconsin's MD/PhD program. Currently a graduate student in an immunology lab, Laura studies the interactions between monocytes and natural killer T cells. When not in the classroom or at the bench, Laura loves running (slowly), gardening, horror stories in the style of HP Lovecraft, and folk dancing (badly, but with great gusto).

As a volunteer EMT, he gained an appreciation for medicine and after graduation, Zachary became a research fellow at the Food and Drug Administration in Bethesda. He is currently enrolled in the Medical Scientist Training Program at Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he is research cancer biology.

Alex was born and raised in College Station, Texas. He graduated in from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors of Science degree, double majoring in biomedical engineering and computer science. He then spent one year in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, as a Fulbright research scholar, developing brain tumor imaging software. After graduating from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, he began an internship in urology at Baylor, with plans to specialize in radiology. Outside the classroom and hospital, Alex enjoys exploring Houston, catching up on exercise, and coding.

Originally from southern California, Stephen earned his undergraduate degree at the University of San Diego in 2010 and his medical degree at St. George’s University School o f Medicine in 2016. Currently he is a retina research fellow at Emory working with Dr. Timothy Olsen, focusing on new techniques for choroidal transplantation and drug delivery using both pig and primate models with macular disease. Stephen’s passions include weight lifting, tennis, nutrition, and cooking.

Xilu (Lucy) was born in Recife, Brazil, completed high school in Ames, Iowa, and earned her undergraduate degree in human biology at the University of Toronto, Canada. After graduating medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine, she began a residency in pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital. In her spare time, Lucy enjoys working out, watching movies, and taking care of her two adorable cats, Ocean and Oliver. 

Meloney Oliveira, MD

Meloney grew up in Mississauga, Canada (but finds it easier to say Toronto, near the CN tower), and attended McMaster University, where she studied biochemistry and medical radiation sciences, specializing in radiation therapy. During that time, she worked to develop a bioactive contrast probe for a PET-MRI imager, using iron IV oxide nanoparticles radiolabeled with copper-64 isotopes synthesized at McMaster’s nuclear reactor facility. She recently graduated from Saint James School of Medicine and plans to become a faculty hospitalist in an internal medicine residency program, and to make scholarly contributions advocating the health benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet. When off the clock, Meloney enjoys weightlifting, brewing homemade Kambucha, and watching reality TV with her sisters.

Ana Maria Dumitru

Ana Maria was born amidst the winds of change in Romania just before the fall of the Iron Curtain. She graduated from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry, and an unofficial minor in rooting for the nation's best college basketball team. Ana Maria is now in her sixth year as an MD/PhD candidate at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where she studies mechanisms of faithful chromosome segregation in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program. No one would have ever believed Ana Maria to be the outdoorsy type, but now that she resides in the wilderness, she enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, and trying to avoid the acquisition of Lyme disease.

Richard is enjoying his residency in family medicine at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!), and still finds time to contribute to multiple First Aid/USMLE-Rx projects, including the upcoming revision of <i>First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1</i>. Sarah is a third-year student spending a year as a research fellow at Yale University’s Department of Pediatric Surgery, where she is studying the role of serotonin in intestinal mucosal homeostasis. She plans on pursuing a career in academic surgery. Before medical school, Sarah trained as a violinist at the Juilliard School, was a Division I rower for Boston University, and completed a master’s degree to practice as a physician assistant. She also worked as a biotechnology and healthcare investment analyst. Outside of medicine, Sarah enjoys practicing Krav Maga, running, and playing the violin.

He is planning to enter radiology residency and hopes to continue involvement with medical education with a focus on clinical imaging and imaging anatomy. Shawn’s hobbies include computer programming, reading Chinese web novels, playing piano, and juggling.
